The Kindness of Strangers - Donald George

Completed April 19, 2007 3/5

This is a collection of short travel stories put together by Lonely Planet. I love the idea for the book and some of the stories were great, but had I known it was a Lonely Planet publication I probably wouldn't have read it. I'm not a fan of their guidebooks, and this wasn't much better.
There were several stories that as far as I was concerned did not hold true to the theme of the book, but were just travel stories.
One thing this book did succeed in doing was to make me miss traveling. It pretty much had me ready to give notice, go home and pack and be on the first plane going where ever!!
It also made me look back on my 'kindness of strangers' experiences on the road of which there were many. (and most of them better than the ones in this book!!)
I think it's worth a read if you have traveled just as tool for reflecting on your own experiences. However I don't think it is done well enough to appeal to someone who couldn't relate to how important a stranger offering their floor to sleep on at 3:00 a.m. in the pouring rain is. ;)
First and last sentences are not really relevant as it's a short story collection. But here are first and last sentences from the last story "Ascension in the Moonlight" by Simon Winchester.
First Sentence: It was a blazing tropical morning in the middle of nowhere.
Last Sentence: And then I walked off into the rain.
