Sunshine Sketches of a Small Town - Stephen Leacock

Completed July 24 2007 2/5

I loved the idea of this book. It was basically a selection of short stories, all of which were about the same small town and its inhabitants. I didn’t really love the book though. It felt quite dated to me, and dragged quite a bit. Each chapter seemed to just be the same joke over and over again, done to death.
I think I would have enjoyed this book a lot more had I read one story at a time, rather than read right through it like a novel.
Favourite stories included the sinking of the cruise ship, the one about the guy courting a girl, and the bank robbery one. I have already returned the book so I don’t know the names of the chapters!
This book was my book club selection for a Canadian classic.

First Sentence: I don't know whether you know Mariposa.
Last Sentence: As we listen, the cry grows fainter and fainter in our ears and we are sitting here again in the leather chairs of the Mausoleum Club, talking of the little Town in the Sunshine that once we knew.
