The Republic of Love - Carol Shields

Completed May 29 2007 4/5

This book broke my heart. I cried for the last 50 pages. I would give this book a 5 for the writing, but I'm only giving it a 4 because it made me so sad. I do realize that the fact it had such an effect on me is even more reason to give it a 5, but I don't like books that make me sad. I also happened to read this right at the same time as a breakup, which I'm sure didn't help matters.

I look forward to reading more by her.

First Sentence - As a baby, Tom Avery had twenty-seven mothers.
Last Sentence - The other hand, which is uplifted (waving or perhaps beckoning), symbolizes a deep longing for completion, the wish for rapturous union, a hunger for the food of love.
